Lawrence County Sheriff Perry Quahliero announced he is retiring at the end of this year. Quahliero, 66, a resident of New Castle’s East Side, has held his elected position for 20 years, having been elected and reelected five times to four-year terms. He ran unopposed in four of those races.
He and his staff of 17 deputies fulfill a host of duties, including serving protection from abuse complaints, transporting jail and prison inmates to hearings from the county jail and from jails elsewhere, serving bench warrants and making arrests, processing license to carry gun permits, and organizing and hosting sheriff sales. “We serve anything from mortgage foreclosures, divorce papers and accidents,” he said. He and his deputies also stand guard in the courtrooms when needed, and they oversee the main entrance security at the courthouse and Central Court.

Quahliero said he is appreciative of his family, friends and county residents who supported and allowed him to serve as sheriff for two decades. “We’ve protected and served the residents as best we could,” he said.
