Fiji weightlifter Daniel Shaw was grateful to win a bronze medal in the 81kg junior category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship (CWC) after recovering from a four-month injury. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Shaw said he was going for a silver medal. “I’m pretty happy that I’ve won bronze despite me pushing for silver in the last attempt and it’s God’s plan,” the 19-year-old said.

“The next competition I’m looking forward to is the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.” Shaw said it was challenge for him to compete after recovering from an elbow injury. “I tore a ligament in my elbow back in Auckland during the Oceania Championship so I was out for four months so from there I started to pick up,” he said.

“Around May, I managed to lift a bar over my head and I’ve been training since that time for this competition.” Shaw said he would need more time and focus on himself. “I’d like to thank the president of Weightlifting Fiji Della Shaw- Elder and head coach Henry Elder for trusting in me to step back in the platform after the injury,” he said.

“I’d like to thank my team for always supporting me and keeping a positive mindset during our preparation.” Shaw said he would put in the extra work after observing his competitors at the CWC tournament. “I just have to stay consistent, listen to my coaches and everything will fall into place.

“I’d like to encourage the youths out there to listen to their parents as everything starts from home.” Feedback: ioane.asioli@fijisun.
