Two of William Shakespeare's family homes will temporarily close to visitors to allow a series of essential conservation works to take place. The projects at Shakespeare's Birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon and Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery, Warwickshire, include minor building repairs, decoration, and general maintenance. Teams will also be refreshing display cases and deep cleaning, according to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT), which manages properties connected to the famous playwright.
Both buildings will be shut throughout the conservation period, which starts from Monday. As well as preserving the buildings and the collections on display, teams would also be taking care of outside spaces at both properties, the trust said. Rachael North, interim chief executive at SBT, said they would be sharing behind-the-scenes content of the works on social media.
"These conservation efforts are crucial for these much-loved buildings," she added. "Both the Birthplace and Anne Hathaway's Cottage play a vital role in the history not only of William Shakespeare and his family but also of Stratford-upon-Avon." Shakespeare's Birthplace will not be accessible to visitors between 6 and 17 January, with the former home of the playwright's wife, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, closed from 20 to 31 January.
