rapplerAds.displayAd( "mobile-middle-1" );MANILA, Philippines – Shaina Nitura logged in another entry in the UAAP history books. Nitura dropped 37 points to reset the UAAP women’s volleyball single-season scoring record en route to lifting the Adamson Lady Falcons over the FEU Lady Tamaraws, 14-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-22, in Season 87 action on Saturday, April 12, at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 20-year-old rookie tallied 314 total points — with still two elimination games left on their schedule — to shatter Alyssa Valdez’s decade-long record of 312 total points during Season 77 in 2015. It was also Nitura’s third straight 30-point outing, and a record fifth in the season, to carry the Lady Falcons to their second straight triumph. Last month, the goggle-wearing phenom also set the record for a single game, unleashing 38 points to surpass the 35 mark of league legends Valdez (Season 75) and Sisi Rondina (Season 81).

While Nitura’s scoring outburst mattered, the win hardly did as Adamson (5-7) already bid goodbye to its Final Four chances after the third-running UST (8-4) triumphed over UE (0-13) in the day’s curtain-raiser. Despite the loss, FEU (8-5) stayed inside the top four.“We fought for this.

Even if there are no more chances for the Final Four, at least, we knew that we could win,” Nitura said in Filipino. “It’s better late than never.”Nitura had 31 attacks, 5 blocks, and 1 ace to carry the load once more for the Lady Falcons as they improved to 5-7.

Frances Mordi and Mayang Nuique added 11 points to backstop Nitura, who has been putting Adamson on her shoulders throughout the season. “I’m very proud of the girls on how they performed because we really wanted to win,” Adamson head coach JP Yude said in Filipino. “We have nothing to lose anymore.

If we could not get into the Final Four, might as well just disrupt the standings. We needed to win so we can build our winning character.” window.

The Lady Tamaraws, though, can easily clinch a Final Four spot if the La Salle Lady Spikers (8-3) triumph over the UP Fighting Maroons (5-6) on Sunday, April 13.The Lady Tamaraws will finish their elimination-round campaign against La Salle on Saturday, April 26, in what could be a high-stakes match, depending on the Lady Spikers’ Sunday results.

Gerz Petallo put up 18 points for the Lady Tamaraws, while Chen Tagaod contributed 12 markers in the losing effort. Adamson will also face La Salle next on Wednesday, April 23, following the Holy Week break at the Mall of Asia Arena. – Rappler.
