Ludhiana: A sewer line collapsed on Old GT Road near Manju Cinema after a road portion caved in on Saturday. Fortunately, no one was injured in this accident. Residents informed the corporation officials about the incident through area’s public representative Iqbal Singh Sonu Diko after which the spot was barricaded.

Repair work of the damaged sewer will begin on Sunday. The residents claimed that road started sinking on Saturday morning and when people doing business nearby noticed the damaged road, they informed the corporation officials through Diko. Before the corporation officials could reach the spot, a large part of the road sank into the ground.

According to the MC officials, the main sewer line passes under the road where it has sunk. The water of this sewer line passes via Dholewal, Jagraon bridge and is dumped into the Buddha dariya through the disposal pump installed on the Gaughat crematorium bridge. Officials say the damaged sewer is about 45-50 years old and it has completed its life span.

However, executive engineer of MC’s operation and maintenance cell Purshotam Singh said, “The matter of damage to the main sewer line has come to our notice. At present, preparations are being made for repair work by barricading the site. Efforts will be intensified to repair the sewer line on Sunday.

” Diko said work was going on to lay underground network cables across the city and it was likely that this sewer line had also been damaged while laying the underground cable.
