Southern Water has apologised to residents for the leaking of sewage from its pumping station in Albion Street, Southwick on Saturday. Residents have been voicing their concern with many saying it’s ‘absolutely disgusting’ and the area ‘smells vile’.

Southern Water has apologised to residents for the problems at its pumping station in Albion Street, Southwick, on Saturday. Water bills going up and this down the road. “Everyone in a BN42 postcode should be refunded and bills paid for going forward to compensate.” Southern Water sent a team to Albion Street overnight and the site was cleared by the early hours of Sunday morning.

Residents at the time complained to Southern Water as their streets and gardens flowed with sewage and the air was filled with a pungent smell. The sewage odour returned in August, upsetting residents, some of who said they were forced to stay inside. At the time Ayesha Street, a mother who has lived in Southwick for six years, said: ”The smell is absolutely rancid.

I have to keep my windows shut and even then it’s not enough to keep the smell out. “I have a newborn baby and I need to allow fresh air to circulate the flat but I can’t now as there is a constant sewage odour. “My children don’t want to play outside and our home honestly smells of poo now.

I even went out the other day to take my bins out and I had to run back in, that’s how foul the smell in the town really is.”.
