A BBC Panorama investigation that was aired earlier this week, December 9, exposed an alleged "accounting trick" Severn Trent used to make it appear it has an investment worth £1.68 billion in its accounts. The letter was written by Stourbridge MP Cat Eccles and has been signed by 20 MPs, including the MP for Halesowen, Alex Ballinger.

In the letter, Labour MP Cat expressed her disappointment at these practices that appear to be being used to "claim bonuses, at the expense of investing in infrastructure to benefit customers and the environment". Her letter highlights the disparity between Severn Trent's claim that it is investing record amounts into storm protections, with the MP saying: "This is not reflected in what we see across our constituencies. "Sewage continues to be pumped into waterways and leaks are left unrepaired".
