One of the most significant projects is the construction of the road from Nanga Makut to Nanga Engkuah at an estimated cost of RM103.993 million, said Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan. “This project when completed will facilitate the daily movement of residents and open up economic opportunities in the areas that were previously difficult to access,” he said.

Besides that, a clean water supply project is also being implemented with a total allocation of RM68.042 million. “This includes several important components – the construction of raw water intake facilities and a new pumping station in Song which is estimated to cost RM8 to RM9 million.

” Other infrastructure projects, he added, are the construction of a pipeline from Song to Nanga Sekedai which is expected to cost between RM20 and RM22 million as well as the construction of low and high water storage tanks in Nanga Tada, Kanowit, which is also included in the overall allocation of the water supply project. Lidam emphasised that these projects will not only ease the burden of residents who depend on inconsistent water sources (gravity feed water supply) but will also improve their overall quality of life as they would be able to enjoy clean and stable water supply. He also informed that the road construction project from Nanga Banjor to Nanga Makut, which is estimated to cost around RM80 million, is currently in the tender process.

He said this project can be a catalyst to improve basic facilities as well as stimulate continuous development in rural areas. “The implementation of these projects is not just infrastructure development, but also an effort to ensure that rural residents enjoy basic facilities comparable to urban residents. Each of these projects will be closely monitored to ensure implementation is on schedule.

I hope that all these initiatives can meet the basic needs of the population as well as contribute to socioeconomic development in the Katibas area,” Lidam added after attending the meeting of the Board of Directors of Ulu Rajang Development Agency (Urda) in Kuching last Friday. After chairing the meeting, Kapit MP and Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta announced that a total of 43 projects have been and are being implemented using the RM1.5 billion funds allocated by the Sarawak government to Urda.

Nanta was quoted as saying that of the total number of projects, 13 have been completed with most of them being road infrastructure projects. He also said the RM1.5 billion allocation was also to implement water supply projects and socio-economic projects where assistance is given to beneficiaries to increase their income, and most of the allocation would be used for road projects in Kapit, Song, Bukit Mabong, Belaga and Katibas districts.
