Surat: Seven people received burns in a flash fire in a building in Katargam area of Surat on Wednesday. The incident occurred when one of them tried to light the stove in a room, resulting in a flash fire due to gas leakage overnight. Fire brigade teams reached the spot and shifted the injured to SMIMER hospital.
The injured were later moved to Kiran hospital, where one person was in critical condition with 100% burns. The seven who sustained burns were identified as Badal Paswan (16), Pradyuman Paswan (21), Anand Paswan (30), Pritam Paswan (28), Mithun Paswan (28), Balram Paswan (28), and Sagar Paswan (21). They all work in textile units.
Dr Mehul Panchal, medical director of Kiran hospital, told TOI: "Of the seven patients, four have been put in the burn ICU, while the other three are being treated in the burn ward. While Mithun received 100% burns, Badal and Anand got 75% burns. All have got second-degree burns.
" The incident occurred on the second floor of Krishna Complex in Katargam around 6am. "We rushed to the spot and rescued the injured and shifted them to the hospital. The labourers were preparing to make food on the stoves in the room.
As there was a gas leakage overnight, a vapour had been created, resulting in a flash fire. The person who lit the stove received the most severe injuries," said Basant Parikh, chief fire officer. The fire brigade received a call at 6.
18am, following which six fire tenders from three fire stations were rushed to the spot. "The blaze was soon brought under control, and the firefighting operation concluded in an hour," said an official. Inspector B K Chaudary of Katargam police station said: "We have seized three gas cylinders from the site and are investigating further.
We are investigating if there was any negligence on anyone's part that caused the incident. One of the labourers is serious.".
