'Serial cheat': Chennai boy, 17, held for cheating girls

A 17-year-old boy in Chennai was detained for allegedly cheating a minor girl of cash and gold by claiming his mother needed surgery. Police investigation revealed he used the same tactic to defraud three other women he befriended on social media, spending the money on luxury items.

Representative Image CHENNAI: A 17-year-old boy was detained by Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police on charges of cheating a minor girl of Rs 75,000 in cash and five sovereigns of gold. He told her his mother was ill and needed money for surgery. However, when his mobile phone was examined, police found he had conned three more women using the same modus operandi.

Police said the juvenile girl befriended the boy on a social media platform. They both shared their family issues through chatting. After ga ining her confidence, he often told her his ill mother needed to undergo a surgery.



The girl gave him five sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 75,000 in cash in various instalments. The girl did not oblige when he wanted more money, so he started to abuse her and also threatened to upload her photos on the internet. She then informed her parents.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s father, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police registered a case and nabbed the boy, a resident of Ambattur. In his phone gallery, police found the boy’s sleazy photographs with three other girls. During questioning, the boy told police he maintained ‘friendship’ with those girls simultaneously through social media and used the same ‘trump card’, his mother’s illness, to cheat them.

Police said the boy bought high-end bikes and spent lavishly using the money he borrowed from the girls. They detained the boy and admitted him to the correctional facility for boys and girls in Kellys..
