Pune: The Uttamnagar police are investigating the murder of a 73-year-old Bibvewadi resident on April 11 at his farm in the village of Sangrun, off Lavasa Road. A cultivator from Sangrun, who was using the victim's land for farming as part of an agreement to share the produce, and his aide are suspected of being behind the murder. The police are searching for the duo.
The police are also investigating a robbery angle, as the victim's family reported that a gold ring and chain, weighing a total of 190gm, were missing from his person. The police identified the victim as Narayan Pandurang Mankar, who, along with the prime suspect, left home for Sangrun in Mankar's car around 8.30am on Friday to attend to some work on the farm.
The victim did not return home until late in the evening, and his family grew anxious about his whereabouts as he was not answering their phone calls. The family members then reached the farm and found the victim lying motionless in his car with injuries caused by a sharp weapon to his back, neck, hands, face and head. The deceased's son, Niraj (43), lodged a complaint against the cultivator and his accomplice.
Senior inspector Mohan Khandare of the Uttamnagar police told TOI, "The suspect is a native of Sangrun, and he stays in the village with his family. He is a farmer. We checked with the suspect' family, but he has not visited home since Friday morning.
We do not know what weapon he and his accomplice used in the crime." "There are no CCTV cameras in and around the farm. Our teams are searching for him in various villages of Mulshi taluka and Panshet-Varasgaon areas," he said, adding, "Prima facie, robbery is the prime motive behind the murder.
However, we are probing other angles to the crime.".
