Sinn Féin scoured the budget documentation in search of a waste-of-money issue, on the back of recent controversies including the Leinster House bike shed and the modular homes cost. It seemed they could pick up the political cudgel marked “value for money”. It would help counter the sea of giveaways. Yes, they’re spending – but they’re pouring your money down the drain.

Confirmation bias led the main opposition party to pounce on the pouches – electronic pockets to seal off mobile phones for the duration of the school day, to be provided to all post-primary schools at a cost of €9m.
