“Do not be complacent. Take advantage of these opportunities,” he said during the Randau Pemansang Sungai Sebedil programme at Rumah Thomas Palus, Batang Igan, Matu yesterday.He cited the free tertiary education initiative for Sarawak students at state-owned institutions of higher learning.



“Make sure our children also benefit from this opportunity alongside those of other ethnic groups, so our community is not left behind,” he said at the event organised by the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Sungai Sebedil.Also present were Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Romeo Christopher Tegong, Temenggong Stanley Gramong, Matu Daro District Council Secretary Chiong Siew Ping, SUPP Youth chief and Bawang Assan branch chairman councillor Kevin Lau, community leaders Penghulu William Kanyan and Penghulu Dennis Ansam, as well as local Tuai Rumah.Lidam acknowledged that the Iban community lags behind in various aspects of development compared to others.

“There must be a shift in our daily lifestyle. Change is not optional – it is necessary, or else we will continue to fall behind,” he added.Meanwhile, he called on the local community to establish formal resident associations to amplify their voices at higher levels of governance.

“With a registered organisation, you can submit requests and express your needs in a more structured and effective way.“I am ready to assist by offering advice. You can appoint Lau and Romeo as advisers to your organisation so that your concerns and applications reach the relevant authorities,” he said.

Lidam reminded residents of Sungai Sebedil to stay united so that any benefits gained through community organisations can be shared by all.He announced an allocation of RM3,000 each for six longhouses in the Sebedil area, while Rumah Thomas received RM5,000 to cover the expenses of the programme.The Sungai Sebedil Area Development Committee (ADC) and local JKKK were launched at the same event.
