Pune: The Seerat Committee , Pune, has decided to defer the procession of Eid-e-Milad on Prophet Muhammad's birthday on Sept 16 to Sept 21 because of Ganesh visarjan . Though Aanant Chaturdashi is on Sept 17, several mandals start queuing up on Laxmi Road a day ahead of the scheduled immersion. The committee has also prohibited use of DJs, dance, and music while taking out procession of Eid-e-Milad.

"Muslim community will celebrate the Prophet's birthday in mosques and other places on Sept 16. But as per the request of Pune police, the procession of Eid-e-Milad would be taken out on Sept 21 between 9 am and 2 pm to avoid law and order problems as members of both Hindu and Muslim communities use the same route for taking out the immersion and procession, respectively," said committee's general secretary Rafiuddin Shaikh on Saturday. City police commissioner Amitesh Kumar told TOI, "We held a meeting with the community leaders at our office and appealed to them to defer the Eid-e-Milad procession because of the Ganesh visarjan.

We thank the community for acceding to our request and deferring the procession to Sept 21. The initiative will foster communal harmony." Community leader Haji Zakir Shaikh said the committee's decision to prohibit DJ music, dancing, and bursting crackers is as per the Islamic tradition.

The Prophet's birthday should be celebrated with decorum and decency, and his teachings should be propagated among the public. The procession, which will be taken out during the day, will see the participation of a large number of women and children along with men. Munawar Qureshi, founder president of the Indian Muslim Front, said, "The committee has not taken into confidence Muslim bazams or mandals before announcing its decision to defer the procession.

It is practically not possible to take out the procession in the morning because considerable time is required to decorate the bazams. The committee had done a similar experiment to come out with the procession in the past, but it did not receive the required response. The office bearers of most bazams are holding talks with the police to grant them permission to take out individual processions in their respective areas between 2 pm and 12 am.
