Surat: On Sunday morning, Kapodra police station in Surat witnessed an emotional drama as the family members of a 20-year-old girl reached there with her body. The family sought justice from police as they suspected a sexual assault on the deceased girl. The girl had gone missing from her house around 3am on Saturday.

Around 8.30am, police received a call that a body was floating in the Tapi near Siddhi Kutir temple at Kapodra. When the body was recovered by the fire brigade, police noticed that clothes on the lower part of her body were missing.

So, Kapodra police took the case seriously and opted for a panel postmortem. They started probing the death after registering a case of accidental death. After the postmortem, it was revealed that the girl had died due to drowning.

The body was handed over to the family. On Sunday morning, her family members and community leaders started her funeral procession from her home in Din Dayal Nagar. The Kapodra police station was on the way to the crematorium.

Some community leaders and family members who were part of the procession became emotional over the untimely death of the girl and they directed the funeral procession to the police station premises. At the police station, they started demanding justice for the girl. Soon, police officers came out and talked to them.

The procession left the police station premises after the family members and community leaders were assured of a thorough probe. Inspector M K Solanki told TOI: "Right from Saturday morning, we took the death seriously and opted for a panel postmortem instead of a normal postmortem. We also checked CCTVs by keeping family members with us.

The girl was last seen near a temple along the Tapi after she had left her home. On this way, everything looked normal. The doctors' reports revealed that death was due to drowning and there were no injury marks in her body or signs of sexual assault.

" Solanki said they talked to the community leader and family members and addressed their concerns related to the probe. "They were convinced of our serious efforts. We are still investigating the case from various angles, including suicide,'' he said.

Box: Head: Blood stains, missing clothes There were blood stains found near the girl's private part and the clothes on the lower part of her body were also missing. This made the family doubt that she had been sexually assaulted by someone. However, the postmortem report revealed that the blood stains were because of her periods.

"Doctors made it clear that the blood was due to her periods and not due to other reasons," said police..
