Section 2 boys’ soccer: Coxsackie-Athens shuts out Hudson to remain undefeated

COXSACKIE — Coxsackie-Athens’ 6-0 victory against Hudson Tuesday night moved them to a 6-0 record, as the Riverhawks defeated the school who beat them in last year's sectional quarterfinals.

“It was good that [our team] came out here with a little bit of a fire and a passion,” Coxsackie-Athens head coach Curtis Wilkinson said. “That's not the same team that beat us last year in the quarterfinals, but it's a stepping stone in the right direction.” The Riverhawks' first two goals came within eight minutes of kickoff, and they led 3-0 at halftime.

Junior forward Eamonn Tighe found the net less than a minute after half, and the Riverhawks’ final two goals both came in the 73rd minute. Coxsackie-Athens had six scorers Tuesday. Tighe had two goals, Asa Decker and Nicolas Camino Perez both had a goal and an assist, Tatum Butler and Brendan Woytowich had one goal each, and junior midfielder Joe Perino had an assist.

The Riverhawks largely kept the ball on Hudson’s side of the field, with sophomore keeper Jacob Grounds making one save on just four shots on goal from the Bluehawks. Hudson’s starting keeper, Pablo Quintero-Romero, left the game with a lower-body injury after the third goal in the 23rd minute when he collided with Butler as the ball rolled into the net. Quintero-Romero finished with three saves.

In relief, senior Rubenedler Bazar made eight saves as Coxsackie-Athens fired 39 shots on goal. On Thursday, Coxsackie-Athens will look to continue its undefeated start at Greenville, the defending conference champions, as the 1-3 Bluehawks will host Catskill. Halftime score: Coxsackie-Athens 3, Hudson 0.
