Second baseman Ozzie Albies returns to Braves for playoff push

Albies was sidelined for two months after suffering a fractured wrist.

Jason Allen/Associated Press MIAMI — Second baseman Ozzie Albies was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday by the Atlanta Braves for the final 10 days of their playoff berth pursuit.

Albies had been sidelined since fracturing his left wrist in a July 21 loss to St. Louis. Albies, a three-time All-Star, was hurt trying to catch a throw when Michael Siani stole second in the ninth inning.



Siani slid into Albies as Albies reached for the ball, bending back his glove hand at an awkward angle. Albies was hitting .255 with eight home runs and 46 RBI.

Second baseman Cavan Biggio was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta is trying to earn a playoff berth without the reigning NL MVP, Ronald Acuña Jr., who had a season-ending knee injury May 26.

CUBS: Chicago placed left-hander Jordan Wicks on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain and recalled right-hander Trey Wingenter from Triple-A Iowa. Wicks, 25, was reinstated from the 60-day injured list with a right oblique strain Sept. 1 and made four starts since his return, going 1-2 with a 7.

50 ERA. The move was retroactive to Sept. 18.

Wingenter, 30, has made three appearances with the Cubs this season with a 4.50 ERA since being claimed off waivers Aug. 2 from Boston.

The Cubs also activated right-hander Hayden Wesneski from the 15-day IL (right forearm strain) and designated right-hander Shawn Armstrong for assignment. Wesneski has been out since July 20. NATIONALS: Washington reactivated Trevor Williams, a 32-year-old reliever who was off to the best start of his nine-year career – 5-0 with a 2.

22 ERA in 11 games – when he went on the 60-day injured list on June 4 with a right flexor muscle strain. To make room on the roster, Washington optioned reliever Zach Brzykcy to Triple-A Rochester. Additionally, the Nationals transferred right-hander Joan Adon to the 60-day injured list.

Williams made two rehab starts with Double-A Harrisburg, tossing 7 1/3 innings across two starts on Sept. 10 and 15. Williams is 49-54 in 200 career games and 11-10 with a 4.
