A seal rescuer hopes to raise awareness of the importance of conservation as she prepares to run the London Marathon. Eden Willmott of Gedney Drove End , will be taking part in the 26.2 mile-long trek on Sunday, April 27, to support the vital work carried out by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
After witnessing the threats that seals and other marine mammals face due to habit degradation, pollution and over fishing, Eden is hoping to raise more than £2,500 for the charity. She said: “I rediscovered my love of running after completing the Landmarks Half Marathon and the Royal Parks Half. “This inspired me to take on the London Marathon, not just for the personal challenge, but to help raise finds for the crucial global conservation efforts.
” The organisation is dedicated to restoring nature, protecting endangered species and safeguarding the planet's most threatened habitats. After completing her A-levels at the University Academy Holbeach, Eden took an internship opportunity and went on to secure a bachelor’s degree in Zoology at the University of Lincoln. Since working at the seal hospital at Natureland Seal Sanctuary in Skegness , Eden has rescued, rehabilitated and released more than 150 harbour and grey seals – allowing them to have a second chance at life in the wild.
Alongside this, she also started the Sealrescuer Instagram account, which has more than 340,000 followers. Eden shares the inspiring rehabilitation stories, advice of what to do if you encounter an injured seal and other conservation tips. With the help of supporters, WWF tackles some of the most urgent threats to nature, including climate change and habitat destruction.
Just £15 could provide 100 tree seedlings to help replant deforested areas and revive vital forest ecosystems. To donate to WWF and help Eden reach her marathon target visit https://2024tcslondonmarathon.enthuse.
