Few teams in the NFL have as dire a need at the wide receiver position right now as the Seattle Seahawks currently do after the team parted ways with DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett recently. Of course, the Seahawks traded Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a blockbuster deal that netted Seattle a second-round pick and saw a swap of late-round picks between the two teams. And, as expected, Lockett was a cap casualty this offseason, ending what was a memorable run for the veteran in Seattle.
The Seahawks reportedly agreed to a deal with quarterback Sam Darnold on Monday, so it would appear the team isn't going to do a full rebuild as some expected in recent days. But the Seahawks must work on surrounding Darnold with more weapons if they hope to recreate the success he had in Minnesota. One player the Seahawks should be watching closely happens to be on a team in the same division: Los Angeles Rams wide receiver and Eastern Washington product, Cooper Kupp.
Kupp was informed in February that the team intends to trade him this offseason, but it appears that is not working out the way the Rams had hoped. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Rams will release Kupp after the start of the new league year on Wednesday if they can't find a trade partner. It's not entirely surprising that the Rams can't fide a trade for Kupp.
After all, he's about to be 32 years old and is coming off three injury-plagued seasons in a row. On top of that, he sports a hefty contract. Assuming he gets cut loose, the Seahawks should absolutely have interest in Kupp, who showed he has some gas left in the tank when he was healthy last season, as evidenced by his tallying 710 yards in 12 games.
The only problem with this suggestion is that both Kupp and JSN do their best work out of the slot. However, both are capable of lining up on the outside, also, with Kupp seeing 33.3% of snaps there in 2024 as compared to 15.
6% for JSN. That said, the Seahawks can't be too picky when it comes to adding a wideout. If offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak believes he can make it work with Kupp and Smith-Njigba, the Seahawks should pull the trigger on a Kupp signing.
