An observation wheel is set to come to Worthing's seafront for part of the next three years. City Observations is seeking permission for a 44-metre-high observation wheel on Worthing seafront from March until November for the next three years, until 2028. It has been recommended for approval by Worthing Borough Council officers.

Worthing has welcomed a wheel on a number of occasions, including last year. To avoid applications needing to be considered each year, the company is asking that if permission is granted, that it also covers the following 3 years. The wheel, which has viewing gondolas, would be located on the Promenade opposite Montague Place.

This is situated within the South Street Conservation Area where there are listed buildings including the Pier, Lido and several others within Montague Place. None of the bodies which were consulted, including Southern Water, National Highways, Historic England or Environmental Health, offered any objection. The Worthing Society had no objection “provided the structure is installed on a temporary basis”.

One comment from a resident requested a ride, which was located next to the wheel last year, be placed opposite Steyne Gardens, or "further away from the residential flats next to and on top of Marks and Spencer’s". The comment read: “Last year this ride – which has a long support, a “pod”, at each end and turns 360 degrees, and therefore has the riders upside down for some of the time, was VERY NOISY with screaming people the whole time it was operating. Day and night time.

“I work in Worthing Hospital and know that there are night shift staff who live in this area and faced with that noisy ride during daytime hours – had a bad time during the stay of the machine. “The feelings of the residents should be considered carefully as Worthing is a retirement area and attracts older people.”.
