India is witnessing a troubling rise in the number of elderly individuals being abandoned by their families. According to a UN report, there were 149 million senior citizens in India in 2022, a figure projected to more than double to 347 million by 2050. Hence, there is an immediate need to address this crisis.
Representational imageIn the Sirmaur Assembly constituency of Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, an elderly couple, Srinivas Dwivedi and his wife, endured two years of neglect after being abandoned by their sons, Vinod and Vijay. Despite previous orders for maintenance, the sons failed to provide any support.In October 2023, the couple sought justice at the office of Sub-Divisional Magistrate, RK Sinha.
Upon witnessing their dire condition, Srinivas in a torn dhoti and his wife in a worn saree, the SDM took immediate action.According to News18, he summoned the sons, issued a stern warning of imprisonment for non-compliance, and compelled them to present cheques of Rs 28,000 each, with a commitment to pay the remaining amount by March 31. In a gesture of compassion, the SDM honoured Srinivas with a new dhoti-kurta and a coconut, and his wife with a sari.
