Scott County Library System is one of 310 small or rural libraries across the country to be awarded a $20,000 grant to expand accessibility to reading materials for young people with disabilities. The American Library Association grant will go toward expanding juvenile large print, audio and read-along collections, according to a news release. The bookmobile will also be a part of providing access to new resources to be purchased with a $20,000 grant. Scott County Library System has locations in Blue Grass, Buffalo, Durant, Eldridge, Princeton and Walcott. "This grant will allow our library to get to know our residents with print disabilities better," Library Director Tricia Kane said.
"It will help us improve our services to ensure that our community has access to the type of materials that they desperately need." According to the news release, Youth Services Coordinator Emily Haage recognized a need for large-print books and other library materials for kids with disabilities in Scott County and submitted the grant application. The book mobile will be key in transporting the new materials to students with disabilities in nearby elementary schools, the news release stated.
