While Scotland is generally known for being friendly, there are some things visitors can do that turn us red in the face. With the summer just around the corner, people from all over the world will be flocking to Scotland. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe alone regularly brings hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the Globe to the Scottish capital.
On April 6, one curious tourist took to social media to ask Scots that visitors should avoid doing while in the country. Posting on Threads, they wrote: "Whats the worst mistake a tourist can make in Scotland?" Since being shared, the post has received more than 540 responses. Scots were quick to share their top tips for tourists to avoid angering locals.
Multiple Threads users urged tourists not to tell locals about their Scottish ancestry . In response to the question, one wrote: "Claim to be Scottish because they did an ancestry DNA test." A second echoed: "Telling Scottish people that they the tourists are more Scottish than Scottish people.
" Many other responses involved incorrect pronunciations of places. From our cities to our villages, even locals can struggle to say them all right. One Threads user stated: "Pronouncing Glasgow as Glass-cow.
" A second agreed, singling out both Glasgow and Edinburgh as commonly mispronounced. Often, the name of the Scottish capital is pronounced as 'Edin-berg' by those not from Scotland. Another shared their irritation when tourists mess up their geography, commenting: "Referring to the UK in general as 'England'.
You certainly don't want to say 'I love it here in England' when you're in Scotland." Meanwhile, one tourist shared an unfortunate experience they had at a shop after misidentifying a Scottish confectionary, writing: "I made the mistake of pointing at tablet in a shop and saying can I have some fudge please? "The guy was apoplectic! I thought he was gonna batter me." On the other hand, one Threads user argued that most people in Scotland don't mind when tourists make mistakes, writing: "Nothing, us Scots love tourists, we love your excitement and every question you ask us.
Five beachside chippies in Scotland to visit while the sun shines "We love to share our history and stories with you. The vast majority of us do not care about wrong pronunciation, jeez most of us can’t pronounce villages up in the Highlands ourselves. "We also don’t care if you are half/quarter Scottish we just love the fact that you know about your origins and I can guarantee that most of us would help you find grave stones/information on where your family came from.
" What do you think are the biggest mistakes tourists can make when visiting Scotland? Let us know in the comments below!.
