It was only a jamboree game, but Scotlandville showed an explosive side Friday night in the Showdown on the Bluff. Playing less than two miles from the Scotlandville campus, the Hornets were right at home as they defeated Belaire 16-0 in the second of three games at Southern's A.W.

Mumford Stadium. Glen Oaks defeated Tara 7-0 in the first contest. The third contest featured Liberty and Istrouma and finished late.

Scotlandville moved at will in the first half against Belaire. The Hornets opened the scoring with a six-play, 59-yard drive that featured three completions from Genard Green to DeWayne Ben. After two 25-yard completions helped erase a personal foul penalty, the pair hooked up for a 34-yard touchdown.

Green found Mississippi State commitment Ferzell Shepard for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 Scotlandville lead. After the score, Scotlandville's defense forced Belaire into a three-and-out that set up another big play. Terrance Smith took the ensuing punt 71 yards for a touchdown as the Hornets lead grew to 16-0.

Smith appeared to be hemmed in near midfield before weaving his way down the left sideline to the end zone. "We've got to work on a lot of the small things, but you could see the explosiveness," Scotlandville coach Ryan Cook said. "Jamborees always have mistakes, and we had way too many of them.

" Green completed 5 of 8 passes for 102 yards. Ben caught three passes for 84 yards. Late in the second half, boosted by Caleb Joseph's 39-yard run, Belaire put together its best drive.

The Bengals moved from their 35-yard line to a first down at the Scotlandville 11 before a fumbled handoff exchange ended the threat. Joseph finished with 104 yards on 13 carries. In the first game between Glen Oaks and Tara, the Panthers' Desmond Baker returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown.

They added the extra point, and the 7-0 lead stood up the rest of the way. Glen Oaks outgained Tara 108 yards to -1, and operated in Tara territory for much of the game. The Panthers hurt themselves with penalties and turnovers.

Glen Oaks was penalized 12 times, six in each half, for a total of 117 yards. The Panthers also lost two fumbles. Tara got near midfield once in each half but never crossed it.

The Trojans held the ball for five minutes to open the second half but picked up only 14 yards. The series was extended when Tara got a break on a punt. On fourth-and-18 at the Tara 15, the ball was snapped over punter Malachi Darville's head.

Under a heavy rush, Darville got off a 7-yard punt that was touched downfield by Glen Oaks. Tara recovered, but was forced to punt after picking up one first down. Tara's final possession ended on downs at midfield, and Glen Oaks ran out the last 3:07.
