Cairo: Saudi justice authorities have referred a lawyer to interrogation for imparting “misleading” information about legal penalties against obstructing car parking outside homes. The kingdom’s Ministry of Justice said it had monitored media remarks by the licensed lawyer that included “misleading information”. The ministry noted that the lawyer’s statement was devoid of any legal basis and said it would take legal action against him through an investigation, based on related regulations and the code of professional conduct.

The ministry did not name the lawyer. But some Saudi media reported that lawyer and legal advisor Ali Al Zahrani said that two-year imprisonment and a fine of up to SR100,000 are imposed on those who ban parking in front of houses, for violating the Saudi public utility law. According to the same lawyer, if the ban is imposed by a simple barrier such as placing a cone or a sign, and it is within the property of a person, then there is no violation of the law - provided the barrier does not distort the general view or obstruct public movement in the area.

Still, if these obstacles are placed in public places or in an area that the person does not own, whether it is owned by another person or is state property, then it is deemed a clear infringement of the public utility law, and the violator could face imprisonment and fines, according to him..
