Senior running back Billy Holtzinger scored three touchdowns and DeSales' defense limited Quilcene to 131 yards of total offense in a 30-0 victory in a Class 1B state football game on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Ty Baffney Field. The Irish will take a 10-1 record into a state quarterfinal matchup with undefeated and top-ranked Liberty Christian next weekend in the Tri-Cities.
DeSales lost to the Patriots, 52-0, on Oct. 24. Walla Walla High School swimmer Madelyn Smith wrapped up her 2024 season representing the Blue Devils in two events at Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Class 3A championship finals in Federal Way at its King County Aquatic Center.
The Blue Devils, who had also seen diver Miriam Hutchens place 12th Thursday, came away from state together with team scores ranking them 24th out of 34 after they chalked up 13 points. Smith, competing in "B" finals of the 500-yard freestyle, wound up placing 12th out of 25 girls while she also finished a 200 individual medley ending up 14th of 24. Holtzinger got the Irish on the board in the first quarter.
Quarterback Sal Sisk hit him with an 8-yard scoring pass at the 6:54 mark of period one. Sisk ran for the 2-point conversion to give DeSales an 8-0 lead. It remained a one-score game until late in the second quarter.
Wide receiver Jason Guest latched onto a 41-yard scoring pass from Sisk with 1:15 on the clock. Diego Caso ran in the 2-point conversion and the Irish went to halftime up 16-0. Holtzinger, who had just six carries on the season, busted loose for a 34-yard touchdown gallop with 2:44 left in the third quarter and added an 82-yard jaunt to the Rangers' end zone at the 9:36 mark of the final frame.
Maddox Filan, who grabbed a game-high five receptions, caught a 2-point pass from Sisk after Holtzinger's first second-half touchdown. Sisk, who completed 14-of-23 passes for 192 yards, had two interceptions in the game to aid the DeSales defensive effort. Guest and Caso had three receptions apiece for the Irish.
Holtzinger added two and Hudson Hall chalked up one. The Irish tallied four sacks in the game. Manning Filan, Guest, Alan Campos, and Javier Guizar collected one apiece.
Quilcene, hampered by the loss of starting quarterback Andrew Perez due to a second-quarter injury, managed just 60 net yards rushing and 71 passing. "It was a good overall effort," DeSales coach Josh Richard said. "All three phases of our game had some bright moments.
"We know we'll have our hands full next week," Richard said. "But opportunities like this are what high school football is all about. We're looking forward to the challenge.
