Sassa Gurl, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, announced her decision on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, April 8, saying that while she respects the stand of the former Commission on Audit (COA) commissioner, she is pulling back her support for her.

“Iginagalang ko po ang tindig ni Mam Heidi Mendoza hingil sa usapin ng marriage equality kaya ikinalulungkot ko pong ipinapaalam na binabawi ko po ang aking suporta. Hiling ko rin po ang inyong pang-unawa sa aking naging desisyon. Paumanhin at pasasalamat po sa inyo,” she wrote.

(I respect Mam Heidi Mendoza’s stand on the issue of marriage equality, so I regret to announce that I am withdrawing my support. I also ask for your understanding of my decision. My apology and thanks to you.

Maraming maraming salamat pa din (Still thank you very much).” Image: X/@HeidiMendoza45 The senatorial bet went viral after voting against same-sex marriage in a recent political debate. “Lahat ay may karapatan magmahal.

Subalit, ang tunay na pagmamahal marunong kumilala at gumalang ng institusyon. Sa family code magkakaroon tayo ng hindi pag sasang ayon,” she said on stage, enumerating the things that can be done in connection with the laws and policies. (Everyone has the right to love.

However, true love knows how to recognize and respect institutions. In the family code we will have disagreements.) Mendoza also took to X to further explain her sentiments, stressing that she respects the LGBT community.

“Tara magmahal (Let’s love). Ginagalang ko ito kasama ang LGBT community (I respect this alongside the LGBT community). Kaya’t ang panawagan ko ay simple: ‘Ayusin natin ang sistema.

’ (So my call is simple: ‘Let’s fix the system). Hindi lang puro deklarasyon (Not just declarations). Hindi lang papogi sa boto (Not just shallow voting).

I am not against love. We are against a system that refuses to honor it,” she wrote. Image: X/@HeidiMendoza45 Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address.

In March, Sassa Gurl declared her support for Mendoza in the May 2025 mid-term elections as she emphasized the latter’s fight against “thieves” in the government and the allocation of 5 percent of every agency’s budget to gender development. Mendoza is allied with re-electionist senators Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan and Bam Aquino, whose cousin, the late former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III appointed the female politician as COA commissioner.
