Ward 1 city council candidate Darren Hill says he has concerns about campaign signs going missing and a suspect who reportedly claimed to be volunteering for him while harassing residents. Kathryn MacDonald, another Ward 1 council candidate, took to social media last week to say she had heard of voters being harassed and intimidated. “We need civic leaders who will unite, not divide.
People at the table who are committed to listening to all voices in our community, not just their own,” MacDonald said. Hill said 120 of his re-election signs have gone missing and that a person falsely claiming to be part of his team was harassing people. “Numerous residents have complained about a male in a black truck harassing them for displaying my lawn sign in their yard,” he said.
Hill also shared an email he received from one of the residents alleging harassment; in it, she said she was picking up her daughter from her ex-husband’s house when a man “trying to campaign on your behalf” arrived and started arguing with her ex-husband. “He then proceeded to call my ex-husband psycho and (said) to ‘take his medicine’ which is extremely unprofessional. He was asked to please leave multiple times before it got to this point,” her letter read, adding that In a news release, Hill said he did not have anyone campaigning on his behalf in the area on the day of the incident.
Hill said a police report was filed, since impersonating someone else is a criminal offence. He said a suspect was identified because someone got a photo of the truck’s licence plate. The StarPhoenix has contacted city police for comment.
