The event, held at Newham Leisure Centre, commemorates Sarah Hammond, a Newham native who tragically died in a road accident at the age of 24. Organised by her siblings, friends, and the Clark family, the fun run has raised more than £100,000 for various causes over the years. As the NHS cannot cover her treatment, her family and friends continue to raise funds for her privately. The race started at 11am, with trophies awarded to the first and second place runners in the men's, women's, and under-12 boys and girls categories. The race was launched by Rita Murphy, a former publican of The Bridge House and The Rose of Denmark in Canning Town.

"Over the last 28 years, our family, supporters, and runners have raised tens of thousands of pounds in Sarah’s memory. "All funds have been donated to health initiatives, mainly to Barts Charity and on occasion to support our runners with major health challenges.
"Hope and her family are long-time supporters of our fun run. "Against all odds, Hope has managed to survive sarcoma cancer for over 10 years, and we are happy to assist with funding her ongoing treatment." The Newham Recorder has been a long-time supporter of the Sarah Hammond Fun Run, which has become an annual fixture in the community, celebrating Sarah's life and raising funds for essential health initiatives.
