FARGO — Sanford Health is raising awareness about gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a chronic form of acid reflux that affects about 20% of Americans. The condition can worsen with high-fat foods, fried foods and other items that are high in acid. Sanford Health experts say certain lifestyle changes can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

"Losing weight is one of the most commonly recommended lifestyle modifications to help with symptoms of GERD. Avoiding tobacco would be another one. And excess alcohol and coffee, you know, and you can elevate the head of the bed by 6 inches or more at night," said Dr.
