Samsung’s rollable phone could be coming in 2025: Here is what we know

Samsung recently lost the race to launch a triple-folding smartphone to Huawei, which introduced the Mate XT in China in September. Interestingly, Samsung filed a patent for a similar device in 2021 but never brought it to market.

It’s hard to believe that the foldable smartphone market is only about five years old, yet it is already starting to show signs of saturation. Samsung, the brand that kick-started this trend in 2019, is now falling behind, according to experts. However, rumours suggest the company could soon make a strong comeback — and how.

According to a new report from the Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is working on launching a rollable phone in the second half of 2025. The device is expected to feature a 12.4-inch display with an under-display camera for uninterrupted viewing, similar to the latest Galaxy Z Fold models.

The report also cites a company insider who claims that Samsung is focusing on “cost-reduction to increase profitability” rather than on innovation. This shift is evident in its recent Galaxy Z Fold series, which is beginning to look increasingly similar to its predecessors. Competitors like HONOR and OnePlus, meanwhile, are enticing users with slimmer designs, larger screens, and other improvements.

At the Consumer Electronics Show 2024, Samsung showcased several foldable and sliding OLED displays, ranging from an “In & Out Flip” to a monitor-sized rolling screen. While The Elec is typically accurate with its reports, it’s best to take this information with a pinch of salt. If the rollable phone is on track for a 2025 launch — still a big 'if' — it would likely debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 or at least be teased during the same Galaxy Unpacked event.
