Samsung is preparing for a significant re-entry into the extended reality (XR) or mixed reality (MR) sector, nearly ten years after the successful launch of its Gear VR headset, which played a pivotal role in the VR market. As indicated in Samsung’s Q3 financial report, a new XR device is anticipated to be revealed in 2025. This strategic pivot occurs concurrently with the Google Play Store's introduction of a dedicated category for XR applications, reflecting a broader movement towards mainstream XR adoption. The development of Samsung’s new XR device is reportedly a collaborative effort with Google and Qualcomm.
Earlier this year, during the announcement of the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung disclosed its intentions regarding this partnership. The new XR device is rumored to be equipped with the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and has recently been identified on Geekbench, featuring 16GB of RAM and a 6-core SoC, which is well-suited for VR applications. It is expected to operate on Android 14 and may include advanced sensors for environmental awareness, potential health monitoring, and a micro-OLED display that offers high pixel density and improved brightness for an immersive visual experience.
Additionally, it may feature a mode akin to the Persona mode available on Apple’s Vision Pro. In light of competition from Apple and Meta, with offerings such as the Apple Vision Pro and the Meta Quest series, Samsung is likely to present its XR device at the Galaxy Unpacked event in early 2025, coinciding with the launch of the Galaxy S25 series. This timing would enable Samsung to demonstrate an integrated Galaxy ecosystem, positioning the XR device as a natural extension for Galaxy users.

This approach could position Samsung’s XR glasses as a vital accessory for Galaxy smartphone users, seamlessly integrating mixed reality features into their daily lives. Also Read: Samsung unveils Galaxy Ring in UAE: A new era of AI-powered health.
