Samsung Electronics is set to invest Rs 1,000 crore (approximately $117 million) in its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, according to a report by Reuters. The move comes just months after the plant witnessed labour unrest, including protests over employee suspensions. Tamil Nadu Industries Minister Dr.
TRB Rajaa confirmed the development in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying the investment reflects the South Korean electronics giant’s confidence in the state’s workforce. He also noted that the fresh infusion of funds would lead to the creation of 100 additional jobs, as cited by Reuters. The plant, located in Chennai, has recently drawn attention due to ongoing tensions between Samsung and its workers.
In February 2025, employees staged a sit-in protest following the suspension of several staff members. Earlier, in September 2023, the facility saw a five-week-long strike involving hundreds of workers who demanded better wages and official recognition of their union. That strike ended after the company reportedly agreed to review the workers’ demands.
Despite the settlement, friction continues between the workers’ union and Samsung. Union representatives have accused the company of attempting to dismantle the union, while Samsung maintains it is complying with all applicable labour laws. The Chennai facility currently employs over 2,000 people and plays a significant role in Samsung’s India operations.
According to company data from FY2022–23, the plant contributed nearly one-fifth of Samsung’s Rs 1 lakh crore in sales across the country. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Budget 2025, Companies,Companies, Business Economy and around the world..
