Samsung E&A is set to play a key role in the establishment of the Middle East's first biodegradable plastic production facility as it ventures into the global eco-friendly market. On April 14 (local time), Samsung E&A announced that it signed a Pre-EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract with global bio company Emirates Biotech for the 'Falcon Biodegradable Plastic Project' in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Under this contract, Samsung E&A will handle essential early tasks, such as basic design and budget estimation for the project.

The contract signing ceremony took place at Emirates Biotech's headquarters in Abu Dhabi, attended by Samsung E&A President Namkoong Hong, Emirates Biotech President Mark Vergauwen, and other top executives from both companies, reaffirming their commitment to collaboration. The project involves constructing a large-scale plant within the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi (KEZAD) to produce 80,000 tons of PLA (polylactic acid) biodegradable plastic annually. This will be the first biodegradable plastic production infrastructure in the Middle East, marking a significant step in the sustainable eco-friendly materials market.

PLA is an eco-friendly plastic made from plant-based materials like corn and sugarcane. It can naturally decompose under certain conditions, making it a promising solution to plastic waste problems. Through this project, Samsung E&A aims to significantly advance its business expansion into the eco-friendly plant sector.

Last year, Samsung E&A announced its vision of becoming an engineering company that “creates a better future through technology.” As part of its mid- to long-term strategy to realize this vision, the company is focusing on diversifying its business around three eco-friendly keywords: 'Low Carbon (E&Able Low),' 'Zero Carbon (E&Able Zero),' and 'Environmental Cycle (E&Able Circle).' “This project marks an important milestone in our first foray into the biodegradable plastics field," said an official from Samsung E&A.

"We plan to leverage our differentiated technology and extensive plant execution experience to successfully lead the project and secure competitiveness in the global eco-friendly market.”.
