According to Samsung Display, it received the Product Carbon Reduction (PCR) certification from TUV Rheinland for cutting carbon emissions in the production, distribution, use and disposal of OLED panels for the smartphones by over 10 percent compared to previous models.

TUV Rheinland, a Germany-based global certification agency, introduced PCR certification in 2023 to objectively evaluate emission reduction practices of products across their life cycle by comparing carbon emissions from production, distribution, use and disposal with those of predecessors. Samsung Display said it reduced carbon emissions by setting up a real-time monitoring system for idle periods of panel manufacturing facilities. This system minimizes standby power and enhances operational efficiency, cutting the power use of production facilities for the two panel models by over 5 percent.

The company said it received high marks in carbon emission management as well by blending wind power into the manufacturing energy source, which was also an industry first. It also improved the efficiency of processing nitrous oxide and other gases used in deposition, reducing overall gas emissions in the process. “For the industry’s sustainable growth, Samsung Display is making various efforts to reduce emissions in manufacturing processes in and outside of Korea,” a Samsung Display official said.

“Starting with our flagship smartphone OLED panels, we will continue efforts to reduce carbon emissions across the entire product lineup.” In September, Samsung Display’s plant in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, was designated as a model plant for circular economy by the Ministry of Environment for its efforts to reduce waste and promote recycling. In 2023, the plant reduced waste by 17 percent and increased its recycling rate to 98.
