A Saltburn shanty group is set to release its first single, 'Santiana.'

The Saltburn Smugglers Shanty Group will release the track - a new version of the traditional shanty 'Santiana' - on all streaming platforms on May 9. The single was recorded live at the Staithes RNLI Boathouse earlier this year, during a session which saw the group record four songs in total. A spokesman for the group said: "It was an amazing day.

"We recorded with Good Boy Productions from Leeds to get a really authentic, natural sound in the Boathouse, and it's completely live - this is how we sound. "It will be accompanied by a video of the day as well." All of the Saltburn Smugglers' gigs this year so far have sold out, according to a spokesperson.

Founder Keith Ayling, who is also a professor of songwriting, said: "It’s been a bit of a whirlwind. "We’ve been building our fanbase, but things have accelerated faster than anyone expected." The group has performed at various venues, including Pickering’s Kirk Theatre, the Teesside Princess, and Talking Tides Brewery.

The Saltburn Smugglers were formed to "highlight the power of singing and its impact on mental health," as well as to create new songs of the sea along North Yorkshire’s coast. The group has since conducted shanty workshops at schools across the North - and has been invited to run a choir day in Cumbria this June. The single 'Santiana' will be available on all streaming platforms from May 9.
