
St. Scholastica baseball got out of a jam at just the right time on Thursday, stranding the tying run on second base in a 6-5 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Bethel on Thursday at Wade Stadium in Duluth. Two Jake Schelonka homers helped CSS get out to a 3-1 lead after three, and the Saints added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-1.
ADVERTISEMENT Bethel put together five straight one-out hits, the fifth a bases-clearing double, to make it a one-run game but Zack Hlinsky came in just in time, inducing a groundout to the pitcher and a called strike three to end the game. Schelonka and Adam Braun finished with three hits apiece to lead the CSS offense, while Payton Jeffries pitched 6 1⁄3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits to get the win. Bethel bounced back to win game two 7-3.
Seven Saints players had a hit apiece. The Saints (7-7, 1-1 MIAC) are scheduled for doubleheaders at Gustavus Adolphus on Tuesday and Wisconsin-River Falls on Wednesday. SOFTBALL Saints drop two at Stout St.
Scholastica softball had a good outing in the hit column but none in the win column on Thursday, losing both ends of a nonconference softball doubleheader 5-2 and 6-3 at Wisconsin-Stout. The Saints outhit the Blue Devils 9-8 in game one and were an even 11-11 in game two but didn’t have much to show for it. In game one, CSS couldn’t hold on to an early 2-0 lead.
Katelyn Hackman and Callie Casura finished with two hits apiece. ADVERTISEMENT In the second game, the Saints got only halfway out of a 6-0 hole through four innings despite three-hit games from Emma Bolin and Hackman. The Saints (4-8) are scheduled to open conference play on Wednesday at home vs.
St. Catherine, and host Saint Mary’s on Saturday. TENNIS CSS women top Concordia-Moorhead Julia Maier took points both at No.
1 singles and as part of No. 1 doubles as St. Scholastica topped Concordia-Moorhead 7-2 in MIAC play on Sunday.
Maier was a 6-2, 6-1 winner in her singles match. Other double winners included Sophia Cosgrove and Katia Bartels, who won their No. 2 doubles match 8-1 then took their respective singles matches in straight sets.
On Friday, CSS ended up on the short end of a 5-4 decision at St. Catherine as the hosts took the top two flights in both singles and doubles and added another point at No. 5 singles.
The CSS men dropped a 5-4 decision at Concordia-Moorhead, with two of their four points coming from Dane Patten at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles (with Jack Onkka).
