The team’s brass went after the wide receiver when he was a free agent in 2022 before he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

And then they again expressed interest this past offseason — only for the wideout to sign with the Buffalo Bills. The third time, however, was the charm. The Saints signed Valdes-Scantling Monday, a league source confirmed.

The wide receiver recently found himself back on the market after the Bills cut him last week, and the Saints had a need at the position with Chris Olave in concussion protocol and Rashid Shaheed (knee) out for the year. “Well, he's played in our league,” Allen said when asked what he likes about the wideout. “He's a bigger receiver, got a good speed element to him.

I think he's somebody that fits some of the things we that might be needing, in particular with loss of Shaheed, another speed element, I think, is something that we would consider.” Valdes-Scantling adds experience at the position for the Saints. Without Olave and Shaheed, rookies Bub Means and Mason Tipton led New Orleans’ wideouts in snaps.

Valdes-Scantling, 30, has played 98 games across seven seasons. The former 2018 fifth round pick has had stints with the Green Bay Packers, Chiefs and Bills. Valdes-Scantling’s speed, as Allen mention, could also help the Saints.

Despite his 6-foot-4 size, Valdes-Scantling ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at the combine and has averaged 16.9 yards per catch throughout his career.

The Bills released Valdes-Scantling, who had two catches for 28 yards in six games, last week to create room for the newly acquired Amari Cooper. “He had a good workout this morning,” Allen said Valdes-Scantling. “He ran around pretty good.
