The frustration continues to grow in The Big Easy. The New Orleans Saints are 2-6, after yet another disappointing loss. This one came to a Los Angeles Chargers team, fresh off of a loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
New Orleans has fallen in six straight contests, the first time since 2005 . Those first two victories to kick off the season feel like a century ago. Those performances were a peak experience for the Saints in 2024, and reaching that level seems nearly impossible going forward this year.
With that, should Dennis Allen feel nervous about his job? He has not seen the postseason over the past two seasons, and the chances of changing that this season are nearly out the window completely. Dennis Allen's job security with Saints Drew Porche noted a great stat on Twitter/X this evening. The Saints have lost six or more games in a row nine times in team history.
Three of those seasons were in the franchise's first four seasons. The other six times caused a coaching change for the Saints. Accordingly, this sort of struggles has almost always led to a firing at the head coaching spot.
Will that be the case in 2024? Only time will tell. Allen was asked about how he feels about his job security after Sunday's loss. His answer was fairly indirect, but he also admitted that the results are what matters.
"We all know that it's a results-oriented business and we have to play better football." -- Allen The Saints head coach, once again, discussed the penalties and mistakes from his team. Allen felt that New Orleans played sloppy.
When you are 2-5 entering a game, that simply cannot happen if you want to get back on track. The Saints did not. "I just thought it was sloppy today.
We got to work hard to clean those things up." The distrust and frustration continues to grow for the Saints and their fans, though. NFL history is working against the black and gold when it comes to making the postseason this year, too.
Since 1970, just three teams have made the playoffs after starting 2-6 to begin a season. Two of those three have come since 2020, but the odds are heavily swayed away from the Saints' favor there. This article first appeared on A to Z Sports and was syndicated with permission.
