Saints bench rookie quarterback in showdown with Chargers

The New Orleans Saints looked like they were ready to light the world on fire early in the season. Now, not so much.

The struggling New Orleans Saints made a quarterback change during the second half of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Rookie Spencer Rattler was benched late in the third quarter of Sunday’s game at SoFi Stadium. Jake Haener took over with the Saints trailing 16-5.

He was just 12-of-24 for 156 yards. New Orleans clearly felt it needed a spark if they were to come back on the Chargers, who had an 11-point lead at the time. Sunday marked Rattler’s third start for the Saints since he got the nod to replace the injured Derek Carr.

The team had not won either of his first two starts, and he had only found the end zone once in them. Saints coach Dennis Allen had indicated that Carr might return for the team’s Week 9 game against Carolina. That will be welcome news for the team, which has seen its offense crater due to Carr and several other players getting hurt.
