Saint-Etienne have been awarded a victory over Montpellier by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) after their game was abandoned due to a fire caused by supporters throwing smoke bombs. The match at Montpellier’s Stade de la Masson on March 16 was initially suspended by referee Francois Letexier after home supporters threw smoke bombs on the pitch and in the stands, causing a fire to start. Advertisement Letexier suspended the match shortly before the hour mark with Saint-Etienne leading 2-0, and Ligue 1 later confirmed the game was abandoned “after a crisis meeting between the game delegates and the intervention of the police”.

Saint-Etienne striker Lucas Stassin had scored the game’s opening goal in the 11th minute. The away side then went down to 10 men shortly before half-time as defender Maxime Bernauer was shown a second yellow card.
Stassin doubled his team’s lead in the 53rd minute, causing the reaction from the Montpellier supporters, according to a Saint-Etienne statement. At the top of Ligue 1, league leaders Paris Saint-Germain look set to clinch a record-extending 13th French league title. Luis Enrique’s only need a draw against 14th place Angers on Saturday to secure their fourth consecutive title.
