BLOOMFIELD HILLS – The Brother Rice Warriors overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Detroit U-D Jesuit 3-1 Thursday evening in Catholic High School League play. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Warriors tied the game about nine minutes after halftime when Ethan Brown crossed a ball from the left side and Ryan Hayes one-timed it past the goalkeeper. Hayes gave the Warriors the lead a little over five minutes later when he got in on goal and slotted a ball into the net for a 2-1 Brother Rice lead.

18 The Warriors dominated play, especially in the second half. They consistently recycled possession in midfield behind the play of Arnoldo Garcia and immediately started up the offense again. The Brother Rice forwards, led by Brown and Hayes, seemed to spend most of the second half running at the Cubs’ defense.

“We made a substitution at halftime. We brought Arnoldo Garcia in the game and just look if we can control the midfield, get on the ball and then improve the quality of our final ball in behind we’ll create chances,” Warriors head coach Danny Price said. “We were just hungry in the second half.

They wanted to win the game, and I’ve got to give a lot of credit to our guys for the resilience and everything that they had in the game.” Cubs goalie Owen Bishop was excellent between the sticks. He ended with 13 saves, including a second-half penalty kick, to keep U-D Jesuit close.

“I would say Owen Bishop was outstanding in net. He made a ton of saves, played well,” Cubs head coach Kevin Tuite said. “Whether the team was up or whether the team was down, he was on fire.

” Eventually, though, the Warriors just had too many good scoring chances, and cashed in another one late when Brown chipped a long ball over the charging goalkeeper with 8:25 to play for an insurance goal. The Cubs had played a solid first half. They were good defensively throughout those 40 minutes, and Camden Arndt gave the Cubs the lead with 8:25 to play in the first half when he tapped in a ball from close range that had been getting ping-ponged around the box.

"Rice had some good attacks, but our back line was playing solid and winning the tackles. We were connecting passes, generating runs going forward. Then the second half we started to lunge in on tackles, we were a little sloppy on our marks.

It created opportunities, and they (Brother Rice) fed.” With the win, Brother Rice evens its record at 6-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the CHSL Central Division. U-D Jesuit falls to 1-6-4 overall and 1-3-1 in the CHSL Central.

The Warriors have three games next week, starting with a Tuesday non-conference match up against Pontiac. “That’s the first game all season that we’ve put together 80 minutes of really good performance,” Price said. “That was the most important thing for me tonight was the energy, the effort, the desire in a Catholic League game like that, and the second half was really good.
