Amazon MGM Studios kicked off its first CinemaCon slate with something truly big, the first look at “ Project Hail Mary ,” Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s sci-fi epic starring Ryan Gosling . In the extended trailer that opened Amazon MGM’s presentation, Gosling plays a middle school teacher brought in to help stop the sun from dying, ultimately forcing him to embark on an impossible quest into deep space, farther than anyone has ever gone, in order to keep not just the Sun from dying, but also every other star in the galaxy. Suffice it to say, he’s reluctant, telling Sandra Hüller that he puts the “not in astronaut.

” The trailer has incredible outer space effects and shows him meeting an alien, who Lord described as Rocky, “the most lovable alien since E.T.” The film is based on a best selling book by “The Martian” author Andy Weir, and the film represents Amazon MGM’s increasing commitment to theatrical.

The studio stated that it intends to release 15 films by 2027 (studio head Mike Hopkins said it already has 14 films slated for 2026). Gosling, Lord, and Miller took the stage at the Colosseum to talk about the film, saying that everything is still a work in progress and that the “effects are not done.” Gosling added that it made the CinemaCon crowd the “first people in the world to see anything from ‘Project Hail Mary’ that aren’t my mom.

” Gosling and the directors also touted the film as a truly big experience, joking that they used PLFs as their monitors and that “we tried to put it on a TV once, it doesn’t fit.” “Project Hail Mary” is directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and written by Drew Goddard. In addition to Gosling and Hüller, it stars Milana Vayntrub and James Ortiz.

The film hails from executive producer Amy Pascal, who recently moved her first-look deal to Amazon MGM in a move that will separately see her share control of the James Bond franchise with Harry Potter veteran David Heyman. Amazon MGM Studios is releasing “Project Hail Mary” in theaters on March 20, 2026..
