Rural cops crack 6 temple theft cases, nab gang behind it

Pune: The Pune Rural police have arrested three men and detained a minor for allegedly stealing idols and valuables from temples across Pune city, rural areas and Satara district . The police recovered idols including a century-old idol and valuables from the gang members. A Supe police team, led by assistant police inspector Manoj Navasare , arrested the suspects while they were attempting to steal from a temple in Dandwadi village near Supe in Baramati on Sept 16.

Navasare said his night patrolling team noticed a car parked near a temple at Dandwadi village. "They became suspicious after finding that the car's registration number plate was covered with mud. Seeing the police, a person in the car drove away towards Supe and two other men came out of the temple and fled," Navasare said.



The officer said after getting an alert from his team, he chased the car till Lonand in Satara district and arrested the driver, Saurabh Patane. Later, his two more accomplices, Omkar Salunkhe and Tushar Pawar, were also taken into custody. "We have also detained their minor accomplice," Navasare said.

He said during the questioning, the gang admitted their involvement in thefts in several other temples. "We have solved six cases, including three registered with the Pune Rural police, one with the Pune city police and two with the Satara police," he said. Navasare said the police have recovered an idol which is more than 100-year-old, two crowns, and other valuables from the gang.
