An international rugby player suffered an incredibly bizarre injury when a crossbar fell on his head seconds after he scored a try The incredible scenes happened during Mexico's clash with Bermuda at the 2024 Rugby Americas North Sevens Tournament in Trinidad, with a video of the incident now going viral online. A gritty game had seen the two sides go into the half-time break with the scores tied at 0-0. But with just four minutes left in the encounter, Mexico looked to finally break the deadlock as Diego Aguilar received the ball near the halfway line with no opposition players standing between him and the try line.
The Mexican number nine raced away but a Bermuda defender stayed in hot pursuit, and ultimately caught him just five metres from the try line, with a heroic tackle sending Aguilar crashing into the pad on the right hand post. While he managed to then touch the ball down for a try, that contact appeared to shake the crossbar loose as the post began to wobble. As a result, as Aguilar stood up to celebrate the try, the metal pole fell from from its fastenings and collapsed on top of him, striking him in the head.
After players and the referee rushed to his aid, the match was suspended for 10 minutes as he received medical treatment. Aguilar's efforts were not in vain, however, as his try helped Mexico to a 14-0 win as they scored again moments after play was restarted. Following the game, physiotherapist Dwain McGuinness - who helped treat Aguilar on the pitch - shared a video of the incident, which has now been viewed over 100,000 times on social media.
Describing it as "the craziest injury I’ve seen in all my years doing pitch-side physio", McGuinness also shared a photo of the injury, with the Mexico star suffering a nasty gash to the top of his head that required stitches. Baffled viewers also couldn't believe what they had seen and took to X to share their disbelief, with one writing: "This is truly the strangest injury I've ever seen on a pitch." Another added: "This is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in a game of rugby," while a third wrote: "This has to be the first time in history this has happened, hope the player is OK!".
