Royal Caribbean International is facing a class-action lawsuit following a hidden camera incident on its ship, the Symphony of the Seas . The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida, was initiated on behalf of a passenger identified as "Jane Doe" and "all other similarly situated passengers." According to Fox News, up to 960 people could potentially be victims of the scandal.
The incident came to light in February when a hidden camera was discovered under a sink by a passenger. An employee, Arvin Joseph Mirasol from the Philippines, was subsequently apprehended after authorities found multiple videos involving children aged 2 to 17. Mirasol was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison last month.
The lawsuit alleges that Mirasol hid under passengers' beds to spy on them and recorded footage of them in the shower. Despite discovering the hidden camera, the cruise line allegedly failed to inform other passengers who stayed in cabins serviced by Mirasol between December 1, 2023, and February 26, 2024. Statistics reported by USA Today indicate that Royal Caribbean cruise ships had 26 incidents of sexual assault or rape reported in 2023, up from 22 in 2022.
Overall, there were 131 allegations of sexual assault on cruise ships in 2023, compared to 87 in 2022 and 101 in 2019. The lawsuit claims that Royal Caribbean "knew or should have known" that sexual assaults were a foreseeable risk given the prevalence of such incidents on its ships.
