Manchester United were given a transfer demand by Roy Keane a couple of years ago.

Manchester United icon Roy Keane called for his former employers to offload David De Gea two years ago, with the Spainard approaching the end of his contract at Old Trafford. But United’s decision to replace De Gea with Andre Onana has come back to bite them, with the Cameroon international guilty of making a host of errors during his time at Old Trafford. And Amorim took action on Sunday as he dropped Onana for his side’s trip to Newcastle .

De Gea left Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 following a 12-year spell in England after the north west giants opted against handing him a new contract. Erik ten Hag , who was the United boss at the time, then persuaded club chiefs to stump up £47million to reunite with Onana after the duo worked together at Ajax. However, Onana has flattered to deceive during his time in the Premier League and was snubbed on Sunday after costing the Red Devils two goals during their 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday.

In his final season at Old Trafford, De Gea won the Premier League Golden Glove award as he kept more clean sheets than any other shot-stopper, with 17 to his name. But Keane was unimpressed with the accolade as he told Sky Sports at the time: “They're all patting him on the back. I'd move him on quickly, De Gea.

He's not going to get United back lifting trophies, absolutely not.” De Gea may not have been at the top of his game by the time he left United, but he was still a dependable presence between the sticks. And the same cannot be said for Onana.

Former United goalkeeper Ben Foster told Red Devils chiefs exactly what he thought of their decision to bring in the former Inter Milan player in October 2023 as he explained on The Cycling GK YouTube show : “It's another mistake. It's a mistake that didn't need to happen.” United chiefs may now be in agreement with Foster, with Amorim addressing the ‘mistake’ by refusing to select Onana in his matchday squad altogether for the trip to Newcastle .

But the 29-year-old could yet win back his starting place after his replacement against Newcastle , Altay Bayindir, gifted the hosts their final goal as the Magpies ran out 4-1 winners. Bayindir attempted to chip the ball forward inside his own penalty area, but his pass was cut out by Joelinton, who headed the ball to Bruno Guimaraes as the Brazilian passed the ball into an open net. And Keane took the opportunity to take aim at yet another United goalkeeper after the mistake from Bayindir as the former midfielder told Sky Sports: “That basic mistake there, honestly I can’t understand it because this is top level, this is big boy stuff.

“If you’re going to go long or you’re going to chip it, make sure you go too far. Then at least it’s up the pitch, you can argue afterwards. If you lose it there, someone is in on goal on top of you.

That’s just common sense.”.
