Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kalyan Banerjee NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a verbal spat between the treasury and opposition benches following personal remarks by Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee against Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia when the House was discussing the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill. The spat, which initially led to two brief adjournments, finally resulted in adjournment of the House for the day without concluding the discussion on the bill as the uproar refused to die down despite an apology tendered by the TMC member. Trouble started when Banerjee alleged non-cooperation by Centre during the pandemic.
Junior home minister Nityanand Rai countered, alleging Bengal govt had tried to put hurdles in transportation of vaccines through its territory. Scindia stood up and supported Rai, saying India emerged as a "Vishwa Bandhu" during the pandemic and helped all needy countries across the world. Banerjee then attacked Scindia and made certain personal remarks against him, referring to his popularity with women, which were expunged by Speaker Om Birla.
When the House reconvened, Banerjee apologised for his remarks, but Scindia refused to relent. Banerjee apologised again but protests from treasury benches continued, leading to adjournment of the House. Stay updated with the latest news on Times of India .
