EL CENTRO — The Imperial County Registrar of Voters said Tuesday it has completed processing all vote-by-mail ballots; however, the Elections Office is currently processing approximately 6,500 provisional and conditional ballots cast on Election Day that remain. This meticulous process ensures that every valid vote is accurately counted. A provisional ballot is a regular ballot that is placed in a special envelope prior to being put in the ballot box because the voter believes they are registered to vote even though their names are not on the official voter registration list at the polling place they went to or they wanted to vote at their polling place, but they did not receive their ballot or did not return the ballot that they received in the mail to vote in person, the ROV said.

According to the agency, conditional ballots are for residents who miss the voter registration deadline, therefore they register conditionally and cast a ballot on Election Day, giving residents the option to vote. Provisional and conditional ballots undergo a thorough review to confirm voter eligibility and ensure there are no duplicate votes. Once verified, these ballots are added to the official results.

This important process is extensive, yet essential to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the election, the ROV said. The review and tabulation of these ballots are expected to take approximately seven to ten days. To maintain the integrity of the process, no further updates will be released until the review and tabulation of the provisional and conditional ballots are complete.

The unofficial results that are currently posted on the Registrar’s website are the tallied vote-by-mail ballots received prior to, on, or postmarked by Election Day. “The Registrar of Voters’ appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as the staff works diligently to finalize the election results,” the agency said. “The Registrar of Voters is committed to ensuring every vote is counted in accordance with all legal requirements in a timely manner.
