Roundup: Rye Cove gets district sweep of Pioneers

AFTON — Once again, Piper Helle hit double figures for the Hampton girls basketball team. And this time, it took her over the 1,000-point mark for her career.

EWING — Jalynn Rogers helped the Lady War Eagles build a comfortable halftime lead at 21-8, and Lexie Holland buried three 3-pointers in the third quarter to ensure Rye Cove stayed in front. Holland made five 3s in the game to give her a game-high 17 points, as Rye Cove took down Thomas Walker on the road 44-27 on Friday night. Rogers recorded a double-double with her 12 points and 13 rebounds, along with three steals and two blocks with Naquila Harless adding six points.

Burton 70, Twin Springs 55 NORTON — Kenzie Gillenwater netted a double-double with her 10 points and 11 rebounds, pacing Twin Springs in the losing effort. Emma Ross nearly had one as well, scoring 19 points with eight boards along with team highs in blocks (3) and steals (5). Addy Bays shot 6-of-9 from the floor and scored 18 points.

Aubrey Meade, who matched Ross with two 3s, added eight points. Unicoi County 72, Sullivan East 66 ERWIN — The Lady Blue Devils answered a Sullivan East rally with one of their own in the fourth quarter. Abagail Vidrio finished 7-of-9 at the foul line with four in the final period to end with 14 points.

Brooklynn Sparks fired in 19 points during the first half, making 8-of-10 free throws and finishing with 25 as Unicoi County jumped ahead 40-30 at halftime. Sparks and Noell Farnor, who scored 13 points, both hit from 3-point range three times. Haley Rush made two 3s en route to her 12-point night.

Sophie Johnson had 21 to lead Sullivan East, 15 coming in the second half as East rallied to lead 58-57 after three quarters. Asia Cairns added 14 points, and Emma Whitaker had 10. Valeria Velasquez and Addison Holly both scored seven.

Union 45, John S. Battle 36 BIG STONE GAP — The Lady Bears got the job done with a 19-5 fourth quarter in which they went 8 of 10 from the foul line. It was during the final period that Union’s Kynlee Johnson accounted for seven of her team-high 18 points and Katelynn Witt, who finished with 16, converted 6 of 6 free throws.

The Bears were 7 of 21 at the charity stripe at one juncture, but rallied to finish 15 of 30. Kara Kelley had 24 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Lady Trojans. Abingdon 59, Wise Central 57 NORTON — Lauren Baker and Annsley Trivette both scored 20 points to help Abingdon deal defending state champion Wise Central its first Mountain 7 loss.

Trivette grabbed 16 rebounds for a double-double, while Baker made four 3-pointers with five assists. Chloe Reynolds had nine points. Emmah McAmis fired in a game-high 25 points for Central, making three triples and 8-of-10 free throws.

Gracie Tompkins added eight points. BOYS Rye Cove 59, Thomas Walker 28 EWING — Luke Jessee, Carter Roach-Hodge and Ben McElroy all scored in double figures for the War Eagles — who led 31-17 at the half before pulling away. Jessee fired in 17 points with five rebounds and three steals.

Roach-Hodge, who buried four 3s, scored 14 points with six boards and three steals. McElroy added 12 points with a pair of steals. Trevor Darnell finished with seven points and three steals.

J.I. Burton 54, Twin Springs 52 (OT) NORTON — Leading by two points with 17 seconds remaining, the Titans missed a pair of free throws before falling in overtime.

Jake Reynolds led the Raiders with his 27-point effort. Chase Scott added 10 points, and Tyson Welch nine. Clay Ross had 17 points to lead Twin Springs, hitting two 3s in the second half.

Jacoby Dunn and Jonathan Berg both hit from deep three times, scoring 16 and 11 points respectively. Unicoi County 90, Sullivan East 66 ERWIN — Jackson Simmons and Kaden Cutlip came out firing, and they led Unicoi County to its first district win. Simmons scored 34 points, making three triples and going 11-of-12 at the free throw line.

As for Cutlip, he knocked down eight 3s en route to a 31-point night for the Blue Devils. Keilet Rodriguez was the next closest scorer with seven points. Kaden Hicks made four 3s and led East with 17 points.

Thomas Ridlehuber added 15, and Eli Hubbard (8-of-14 free throws) had 14. BOWLING D-B unified team finishes runner-up SMYRNA — The Dobyns-Bennett unified bowling team came up just short of defending its state championship. With victories over Nolensville (308-283) and Franklin (289-182), the team returned to the final.

Kenwood came away victorious this time, taking a 322-259 decision. D-B girls fall in semis For only the second time in program history, the Lady Indians reached the state semifinals with Thursday’s 10.5-6.

5 triumph over Lawrence County. The run came to an end Friday night, as Hardin County prevailed 21-6 to advance to the state championship. WRESTLING Class AA Sectional Knoxville Halls 39, Science Hill 34 KNOXVILLE — Andrew Kneisley scored Science Hill’s only non-forfeit win at 165 pounds, winning a 12-2 major decision over Kizer Meek.

It was the Hilltoppers’ second victory, after Chase Smalling took 126 pounds by forfeit to give Science Hill a 6-3 lead. Kneisley’s win cut Halls’ lead to 30-10. Barrett Whaley’s 12-7 decision at 175 pounds helped Halls clinch the match, as the Red Devils took a 39-10 lead before forfeiting out.

David Reed, Haiden Cox, Nick Evans and Saxon Mattison got credit for those wins. Class A Sectional Pigeon Forge 43, David Crockett 31 PIGEON FORGE — Trailing 31-3, Crockett got four straight pins and a major decision to pull even. But Joshua Huskey and Lucas Pratt both scored the fall to end the match and send Pigeon Forge to state duals once again.
